As this is my first post on my new blog I wanted to say a little hello and tell you a bit about why I’ve started This Mother. I’m Emma, living in Aberdeenshire, and still adjusting to life as a working mother of two.
I first started blogging after I became a mum to Isaac in 2012. I then created a blog for writing about travels around Scotland, with a focus on family-friendly holidays and day trips, which was put on hold after I had my daughter, Flora, in 2015. And so This Mother has been born out of these two blogs, a space in which I can continue to write about travels around Scotland but combined with posts on motherhood, craft projects and everything in between.
I have a 3 year old son and a 10 month old daughter. I work from home which has its pros and cons, and the whole family is still adjusting with my recent return to work. I’m struggling with lack of sleep. I am an over-thinker but I am trying hard to let go of the not-so-good bits at the end of the day and focus on the positives. In each day there are the hard moments – the tantrums and tandem screaming, the constant battle to get clothes on and off (today’s gem from Isaac – ‘I can’t wear that fleece, it’s too zippy’), the endless negotiations. Yet in the debris of the day, amongst the tears and tiredness, there are the precious moments that stop you in your tracks: the moments onto which you hold oh-so-tightly and tuck away into the very folds of your heart.
The baby days of my eldest already seem a distant haze, a blurry memory that I can’t quite grasp. I don’t want to forget this crazy, exhausting, beautiful time. And so This Mother is for me, for anyone that may find something of interest in my words or pictures, and for my children – you are my everything, always.
