Review: Sandwick Bay Candles Subscription Box
Autumn is my favourite time of year: the landscape lit in shades of red and gold; beautiful crisp days; a season of scarves and knits, pumpkins and conkers, blankets and candles.
Now that the days are getting shorter my evenings are lit by the flickering of candles. I was recently gifted a lovely Sandwick Bay Candle subscription box with a hand-poured, 100% natural soy wax candle. It arrived just before I bought The Art of Coorie. ‘Coorie’ is a Scottish word for cosy and snug, and to me candles and ‘coorie-ness’ go hand in hand. I can’t think of a nicer way to spend an evening than snuggled under blankets with a cup of tea and a book, and a candle burning beside me (in an ideal world I’d add in a roaring fire to boot, but alas we don’t have a fire here).
Natural soy candles
I was excited to open the box as I had no idea what was inside. My first impression of the beautifully designed box was that it expressed a love of the outdoors, and that it had a distinct Kiwi feel to it with its curled fern leaf pattern (owner Megan Macdonald is from New Zealand and now lives in the Outer Hebrides).
In each subscription box there is an added extra each month to go along with the soy candle (which is exclusive to subscription members – these candles are not in the range that you can order online from https://sandwickbaycandles.com). There was a note to say that for this month (September) Megan couldn’t decide between the coffee sample and the coffee and walnut brownie so had included both. And yes, the fragrance of the candle was indeed freshly brewed coffee. It smells delicious! I often burn lavender candles so it has been lovely to have something quite different, and it’s nice when I’m working to have its warming fragrance wafting through the house. Who doesn’t love the scent of freshly brewed coffee?
Megan has been doing the subscription boxes since January, and they start at £22 a month including postage (they’re sent on the 4th of each month). The candles burn up to 70 hours and as well as being made with 100% soy wax they contain premium, phthalate-free fragrance oils. I switched to soy candles a few years ago after my son developed viral asthma and I found this post from Megan’s blog on why she uses soy wax really interesting.
I think they are such a lovely idea and perfect for candle-lovers. I love that Megan includes a little extra that matches the candle. The Hebridean Brownie Co brownie was so delicious and as a big coffee fan, this was the perfect box for me.
